Birmingham music teaching website nominated for prestigious Royal Television Society award Nov. 2, 2016

We are very proud to announce that one of our projects has been nominated for a Royal Television Society Award.

ReelMusic is a new digital resource for music teachers

• Developed by three Birmingham-based organisations: ReelLearning, The Music Service at Services for Education and Vyka

• Now nominated for the Best Digital Innovation Category of the Royal Television Society Midlands Awards

A new digital resource for music teachers has been nominated in the Best Digital Innovation Category at the Royal Television Society Midlands Awards.

ReelMusic is the first digital resource of its kind, created specifically for music teachers and professionals. The website is home to 230 short videos, all filmed within Birmingham classrooms, that show different techniques and tools for music teaching. The videos encompass diverse topics including classroom management and ending a lesson to the teaching of warm-up breathing exercises and how to improve pupils’ confidence.

The website was developed by technology company ReelLearning, working in collaboration with Birmingham’s Music Service (part of Services for Education) and film company Vyka.

ReelMusic.co.uk is currently available to all music staff and music co-ordinators in Birmingham’s 423 schools, with plans to roll out the website to schools around the country over the next year. The website launched in April 2016.

Rebecca Bartlett, Director of ReelLearning, explained how the ReelMusic.co.uk came about:

ReelMusic is designed to encourage conversation and debate amongst music teachers. It can be a very isolating job – many music teachers are the only music specialists in their schools – and so having a platform to look at new ideas can be invaluable. We know that teachers are finding it increasingly difficult to attend training courses, and this website is a time-effective way to manage their CPD. The short videos help teachers to get into other people’s classrooms and spark new ideas.”

Ciaran O’Donnell from The Music Service at Services for Education, commented, “ReelMusic is not a simple resource bank. It is a tool designed for the music education profession to encourage induction, conversation and debate amongst instrumental and school staff. It’s perfect for inducting new staff and supporting planning for all music teachers.”

Paul Davies, Director of Vyka, added “The videos on ReelMusic were all filmed in Birmingham schools. The three partners worked closely to ensure that we captured quality footage of best practice teaching that would work well on this platform.”

The videos on ReelMusic were filmed in Birmingham schools during the 2015-16 academic year, including Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls, Jervoise Primary School, Holy Souls Catholic Primary School and Rockwood Academy.

ReelMusic has been nominated in the Best Digital Innovation category of the Royal Television Society Midlands Awards. The winner will be announced on Thursday 3 November at a gala ceremony at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.
